Seminar on the Current Problems of Shipowners’ Liability Insurance

On 28 October 2011, a seminar on the Current Problems of Shipowners’ Liability Insurance was held in Moscow. The event organizers were Sokolov, Maslov & Partners law firm, the Russian Insurance Lawyers Society (RILS), and the Moscow Reinsurance Company.

The keynote address was delivered by Anna Arkhipova (PhD (Law) degree), a member of the RILS and a partner of Sokolov, Maslov & Partners law firm. Anna’s talk covered the history of shipowners’ liability insurance in Russia, the analysis of the latest draft legislation in the sphere, and provided a detailed presentation of the mutual insurance mechanism in P&I clubs.

The co-reporter Sergey Dedikov, the RILS senior partner and a legal adviser of Moscow Re company, focused on the correlating regulations of the Civil Code of the RF and the Merchant Marine Code, as well as those related to shipowners’ liability and property insurance.

The seminar was attended by members of the RILS, representatives of VSK, AlfaStrakhovanie, Chartis Insurance Company, Allianz Insurance Company, AON Rus - Insurance Brokers, Unity Re, Yakor, Investflot, and representatives of other companies engaged in marine and insurance business.

The discussion participants reached the conclusion that the draft legislation related to the sphere needs serious modification to take account of Russian shipping traditions and insurance practices of foreign P&I clubs.
